Sustainable kitchens are becoming a part of modern life, so now's the time to give your kitchen plans a sustainability makeover. It's not as hard, or expensive, as you might think.
It might sound obvious, but this one can really make a difference. When the time comes to purchase your new fridge and dishwasher, choose makes and models that have good energy and water ratings. How? Look for the stars. The more the better.
A sustainable kitchen isn't worth its salt unless it has water-saving taps. Opt for a brand that has a good water rating, or retrofit your tap set with a flow control system or aerator. For just a few dollars, it can halve your tap's output without affecting the water pressure.
Your kitchen requires a lot of light most of the time, so make sure you choose wisely by installing fluorescent lights. They might cost a bit more to purchase, but over a five year period will save you as much as 650kg of greenhouse gas.
Box your fridge into a tight space and you'll pay for it. Because, if your fridge doesn't have enough space to 'breathe', it uses more energy trying to stay cool. Allow an 80mm plus gap at the back and avoid putting it next to a heat source.
A rangehood is a convenient addition to any kitchen, but being able to throw open a window can be an energy saving alternative, so if your design allows it, make sure you install a kitchen window (one that opens!) in your new room.
