Contemporary pool with fun factor

Despite the challenges of a split level, this pool and spa have exceeded the owners' expectations. Savvy pool builder Phil Kilworth and landscaper Clive Morris put their heads together to create a stunning oasis.

When the owners of this Inverloch pool said they wanted "something a little different", they certainly got their wish. Wise use of the space with an intricate mesh of colour, lighting and water has created not only a contemporary pool and spa, but a private oasis.

Phil Kilworth from Serenity Pools says the project was a challenge because of the natural fall of the land. "The block had a big step that rose toward the rear," he explains. "Originally, the spa was supposed to be on the same level as the pool, but we decided to use the split level to our advantage, with the spa raised one metre above. We were also conscious of space, due to the size of the home, so the pool was put right along the boundary wall to complement the house."

The spa is undoubtedly the fun, focal point. A unique design touch is the 600mm glass wall, creating a quirky fish-bowl effect. Owner Mark and his family can sit and relax while looking out at the world, taking in views of the lovely landscape or watching family and friends play tennis.

In another clever twist, the swimming pool steps have been placed in a 600mmX600mm swim-out, not only so they don't clutter up the pool, but also as a thoughtful inclusion for young swimmers, who can use it as a safety ledge.

The soft tones of the earth-coloured water feature wall are an excellent match for the landscape design masterminded by Clive Morris. Four stone rebates are also set into the wall surface and lit up, bringing out the natural slate stone. Another lighting feature is positioned on the side of the house (directed towards the feature wall), to prevent glare intruding on the night-time aesthetic. The lagoon-like effect is enhanced by the green ceramic mosaic tile interior.

Low-maintenance cleaning and solar and gas heating top off this contemporary pool package, which not only achieves an amazing aesthetic, but has a definite fun factor.

How did the raised spa come about?

Because we were working with a split level, we realised that if the spa were to be at pool level, steps would be required. Instead, we went for a raised spa. This has resulted in a nice graduation between levels - from the shed at the back of the pool to an upper paved level with the spa, then down to the pool.

Were there any challenges involved in the construction?

Inverloch is close to the beach and lies on a water table, so during excavation we had a few cave-ins. The fact that the client's property was lower than the neighbouring property added to the excavation issues, and meant we had to do formwork to ensure a nice, solid structure for the concrete pool. The split level was another challenge, but we overcame it.

What's your favourite part?

The glass wall in the spa. It's different, fun and looks great at night. I also love the fact that it looks like an oasis from the street.

What was your brief to the designer?

We wanted a concrete, tiled swimming pool for our new home - although originally we had to be convinced about the extra value of concrete. We had a plan, but weren't sure about the pool size, spa position or features and how it would all work. Eventually, the pool became a design feature as well, which blends beautifully with the landscape.

Were there any challenges along the way?

No, everything went smoothly. We worked with Phil closely. It was easy to communicate with him, as he was there every step of the way and looked after the whole project.

What's your favourite part of the pool?

Swimming in it! There are about 12 metres for swimming laps. The spa's good too - it's located above the level of the pool, which is not only functional, but gives it a great contemporary look and suits the terrain.

Is there anything you'd do differently?

It was our first experience with building a concrete pool, but we wouldn't change anything. As far as the project went - contrary to many pool-building nightmares we'd heard about from friends - the whole process was enjoyable.
