Dip into the story of a luxury pool project

When Richard and Kevin were thinking about what they wanted from their new pool, they came to a few conclusions. The pool had to have a natural look and feel, but still incorporate modern architectural lines, and it had to work as an entertainment area. The result, by Queensland company Majestic Pools & Landscapes, is an inspired interpretation of this brief.

The luxury pool project didn't come without its challenges. Privacy was important to Richard and Kevin, so the existing dense, tropical garden had to remain relatively undisturbed, and secluded areas had to be built into the design as the site faced a parkland area. The fact that the site was sloping and situated in a river causeway presented another potential difficulty.

The luxury pool was built 1.2 metres above ground so as to eliminate the possibility of a wash-out if the river causeway flooded. Necessity was the mother of a great invention, though – the 1.2m elevation meant Majestic could create a private seating area in the pool, with the edge of the pool acting as a bar.

A natural rock pool look was created by placing hand-selected rocks at different points around the edge of the pool. More rocks, doubling as seating, were placed at the bottom of the pool. The water feature, a clay bowl 1.2m in diameter, was positioned on a specially constructed stand, with a 'bubbling brook' effect inside the bowl creating a soothing feel.

This luxury pool also features Himalayan quartz surrounds and timber decking. The design seamlessly melds the different materials used with each other and the landscape. The palm trees around the pool tie in with the natural look of the rocks, as does the polished pebble internal finish. The Himalayan quartz complements the rocks, but also creates the clean lines the owners wanted, as do the timber steps and decking.

Richard and Kevin couldn't be happier with the result, especially as it fulfils their original desire for a first-class entertainment area. "My overall favourite thing is the feeling you get when everyone comes round to enjoy our tranquil urban retreat," says Richard.

Majestic Pools & Landscapes

What was the brief?

To create a contemporary, tropical look integrating a natural  feel with semi-formed architectural lines, using natural stone and wood decking to flow through the landscaping, interlocking all areas of the pool.

Were there any challenges with this luxury pool?

The pool had to be at a specific level to counteract any potential water issues from the river causeway, and it had to work with the larger existing palms.

Are you happy with the overall result?

The result was exceptional – the pool should be in a resort. It's a great example of interlocking planting and nature with solid structures and form. We were also very pleased that the pool won a SPASA Queensland and a SPASA National award.

What's your favourite aspect of the project?

I can't choose just one favourite part. The whole pool can be enjoyed from so many areas and levels, even including the view from the park for people walking past.

What was the brief?

We wanted a pool and surrounds to equal the pool we had in our previous house. Although we both prefer the natural look, we wanted the design to also flow into a contemporary look to match the house. Our most important 'need' was to link the house with the tropical landscaping.

Were there any challenges?

The pool had to be designed to accommodate a sloping block and potential flooding issues. All the entertaining areas that are so important to us had to be interlocked.

How did you choose your designer?

To create the look you want you have to go to a highly awarded company that has a strong emphasis on design. Majestic also built the pool in our previous home, and we were very happy with the work they did on that.

Are you happy with the overall result?

How could you not be? It's perfect!

What's your favourite aspect of the project?

The interlocking of the already-established garden into the finished project … fantastic!
