When Amanda and Paul wanted to give their 1940s bathroom a new lease on life, a separate shower and bath were at the top of their wish list. With a growing family, they wanted to transform the lilac-hued horror into something subtle, sophisticated, but above all functional, and that meant gutting it and starting again from scratch.

Four years after first-time renovator Jason purchased a 1950s home in Ballarat, he knew he couldn't put off the bathroom renovation any longer. The bathroom was somewhat of a disaster zone, given it hadn't been touched since the house was built.

When Katy discovered one of the showers in her 15-year-old bathroom was leaking, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to redo the entire bathroom and bring it into line with the rest of their upmarket home. Having originally considered using a pale marble throughout, consultation with designer Don MacDonald convinced her to opt for something more original.

Being accustomed to the open-air ambience of their Byron Bay farmhouse, when Terry and his wife set about renovating their Darling Point apartment their first priority was to open their master bathroom up to the stunning harbour views below.

Like a magical room that changes to fulfil every bathroom requirement, this ensuite functions as an oversize shower, spacious make-up room or luxurious toilet.
